Members of Home in Frome have now completed the long-awaited Working Memories website.
The site: www.workingmemoriesfrome.co.uk went live on Tuesday 27th October 2020, exactly eight years on from the launch of the original Working Memories book.
The website was put together by a small team, including coordinator, Gill Harry; editor, John Payne; film and video maker, Alan Campbell; and computer wizard, James Gardner. They began planning three years ago, with support from Frome Museum, a grant from Frome Society for Local Study, and help from other Home in Frome members and friends.
Visitors to the website can listen to extracts from the many memories recorded between 2010 to 2012, in the voices of the original interviewees. The web pages are organised in sections which match those of the book, and subjects range from education to farming, housing, industry, shops, public services and wartime. People without a computer will be able to access the website at either Frome Library or Frome Museum (please note that computer access will need to be booked in advance).
Its creators hope that the new website will be a welcome addition to existing local resources and will serve as a hub for the gathering of further tales from Frome’s past. Home in Frome are welcoming people to get in touch and add their stories to the site. To coincide with the launch of the web-site, a reprint of the Working Memories book with a new introduction was published and is on sale at £10 per copy at Winstones (Hunting Raven) Books, Frome Museum and other local outlets.
